What does a session with Robyn Barraclough look like?
Regardless of which modalities I use, I am working with the person in front of me, you, not a disease, not your friend who has the same problem, but you. As such, the treatment plan will be different for each person, any remedies prescribed will be tailored to you. Any sessions will be based on where you are today, now, and what you are hoping to achieve by coming to see me.
Robyn Barraclough is a Herbalist, Homoeopath, Body Harmony® Teacher and Body worker. When you come for your first visit, I like to take a detailed history, this gives me the background I need if I am going to prescribe herbs, homoeopathics, tissue salts or supplements.
I will often include bodywork – Body Harmony® , into this or subsequent consultations, because experience has shown me that we get a fuller picture of what is going on, and achieve better, sustainable results. Added to that, you often gain insights or experiences that start you on your way.
If you come for a herbal /homoeopathic consult I will choose from herbs, homoeopathics, supplements, Bach Flower remedies, or tissue salts to suit your presentation.
If you have had Body Harmony® you may not be prescribed anything on the first consultation, so that I can get a clearer idea after the bodywork has had, and to allow any remedy picture to become clearer.

Herbal Medicine has been used for thousands of years to treat people. Since the time of Dioscorides, there have been people, doctors, midwives, shamans within each community who have known about and passed on the knowledge about herbs and plants to the communities shaman, wise women. For many centuries, Doctors treated using plants listed in their Pharmacopoeia’s. Even many of today’s drugs started out as synthesised versions of plants, for example aspirin was based on the herbal use of willow.
Nevertheless, I have a very healthy respect for herbal medicine, just because a herb is “natural” doesn’t mean that the uninitiated should self treat. When we treat with herbs, we are looking at you, a whole person, not just one symptom. We are looking for a “fit” of your “symptom picture” to the herb or herbs we are prescribing. Then we are choosing a dosage that fits your energy levels, the severity of your symptoms, and is likely to stimulate your body towards healing.
Homoeopathy was founded by Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843). Hahnemann was an apothecary, a linguist, who translated medical texts in order to fund his studies. He was intrigued by a statement he translated in a text by William Cullen which said “Cinchona cured malaria by its action on the stomach” He decided to find out for himself. He chewed a little daily, and discovered he was developing fever and symptoms similar to malaria. Similarly, he recalled mercury miners developing an illness looking like syphilis, and mercury was used to treat syphilis at the time. Consequently, a medicine can heal a disease if an overdose of that same medicine produces the same symptoms of the disease.
He was keenly observant. He noticed that by giving less of a remedy that it became more effective. As he studied further, he found others like Paracelsus had discovered a similar concept in the 1400’s. He started using smaller and smaller doses, and found improved results. Finally he diluted the substance using a process of diluting them in alcohol and then succussing (shaking the dilution to blend it in the alcohol).
Depending on the number of times it was diluted differentiated the different potencies, x indicated it was diluted 1drop of remedy to 9 drops of alcohol, C indicated 1 drop of remedy (or previous potency) to 99 drops of alcohol. And the number indicated the number of times this had been done, e.g. 3 6, 12, 30, 200, 1000 (1M) etc. Hahnemann’s life work was testing and proving numerous remedies, and treating the sick. He had great success treating people in life threatening epidemics at the time.
During a Scarlet fever epidemic, he used Belladonna, also used for arthritis, in greater dilution for healing effect. He found that he could use the remedies as a prophylaxis and they would be preventative. In 1813 he treated Napoleonic solders camped outside Leipzig. They were suffering injuries and typhoid after fighting in Moscow. Out of 180 soldiers only one died, all the rest fully recovered after treatment by Hahnemann.
Homan – similar
Pathos – suffering
In toxic doses, a substance creates similar suffering,
but in small doses stimulates the body to heal.
All medicines abide by the same rules. (Note the side effects information on conventional medicine)
Homoeopathy has come a long way in its understanding since the days of Hahnemann. There has been an enormous amount of work and experience gained throughout the world since then, and with each development in understanding of physiology, so too does our homeopathic understanding increase.
If a homeopathic remedy is chosen for you, it may be in the form of pillules or drops to be taken in a dose that is appropriate to you.
I may ask you to contact me in a couple days or a week so that I can hear how the remedy is going for you, and make any adjustments to dosage if required. This is an important part of your consultation, and may be overlooked as bothersome. In fact it helps me to give you the best care I can. Why you may ask? Because you are you, and not your neighbour, you will respond with a different sensitivity your neighbour. Calling me means we can fine tune the remedy and dosage to you for the best results.
Biochemic remedies, or tissue salts were discovered and developed by Dr. Wilhelm Schuessler, (1822-1893). These are based on the 12 essential mineral salts within our bodies.
Tissue salts work at the biochemic level, stimulating and regulating our use of minerals in the body, at a cellular level. There are a number of indicators for specific tissue salts, ranging from case history information, to facial analysis. For facial analysis it is important to come to your consultation without any makeup, as we look at your skin colours as part of the guideline for prescription.
Bach Flower Remedies
Bach Flower Remedies were created by Dr. Edward Bach, in his search to find plants that could heal the sick with no ill-effects. He taught that the basis of disease was found in disharmony between the spiritual and mental aspects of a human being. This disharmony was found whenever conflicting moods produced unhappiness, fear, lassitude, and resignation, and lowered the body’s vitality. For this reason, Bach flower remedies treat the mood and temperament of the person, not the physical illness. He wrote in his book, “The Twelve Healers and other Remedies” “The individual is treated, and as he becomes well, the disease goes, having been cast off by the increase in health.” Dr Bach stressed that his remedies could be used with any other form of treatment, and would not clash or interfere.
The best known of these is Rescue Remedy for times of stress or trauma.
Iridology is the study of the patterns within your irises in conjunction with your case history. Iridology is not fortune telling, It is seeing how life’s experiences have impacted on your body over time as reflected in your irises. The impacts may come from physical stresses on your body, emotional stresses or environmental stresses. This is where your case history, and my questions become important to help ascertain where the stresses have come from, combined with the picture of your irises to see the effects on your physiology as reflected through your eyes. Iridology can help give clarity to your case, and assist with the selection of appropriate remedies and treatments.
Facial analysis can be used to help refine remedy selection, particularly of Tissue salts or Homoeopathics. Your face can hold clues to mineral excess or deficiency, or life patterns. When we do facial analysis, I may take some photos for further reference, and clarity.
